What volunteers actually do

• Run sessions at libraries, senior centers, and community centers
• Take a section of the talk, or start by helping and watching
• Answer questions afterwards, one to one
• Help find local host sites that would like a session

Nobody is thrown in at the deep end. Most volunteers help at a session or two before they teach part of one.

Who can do this

• High school students. That is our minimum age.
• No past finance experience is necessary. None at all. We give you the material and show you how it is taught, and most of what we cover is the sort of thing you already know from growing up with a phone in your hand.
• It helps if you are patient and can explain things without jargon. That matters far more than knowing about money.

What it asks of you

About an hour a week. Sessions themselves run 30 to 45 minutes and two volunteers go to each one, so most of that hour is the session and getting to it.

There is no minimum or maximum commitment. No semester you have to sign up for, no quota of sessions, and no problem if you are busy for a few weeks. Do as much or as little as your schedule allows.

Training is getting familiar with the material. We give you the slides and go through them with you. There is no course and no test — you read it, you watch a session, and then you take a part of one yourself when you feel ready.

Some host sites ask visiting volunteers to complete a form, a code of conduct, or a background check first. If yours does, we will walk you through it.

There is also a liability form to sign before you present at a session. We send it to you once you have signed up, so there is nothing to sort out before you fill in the form.

Starting a chapter where you live

If there is no chapter in your town, you can start one. That is how most of the chapters on this site began. As a chapter lead you find host sites, book sessions, and build a small team of students around you.

It is more work than volunteering at an existing chapter, and you will not be doing it alone. Say so on the form and we will talk it through with you.
